Weight loss injections - saxenda

Saxenda

About Saxenda

The medication Saxenda is a once daily prescription-only injection licensed for weight management in adults, in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

It comes in the form of an easy to use pre-filled injection pen; you will be supported with information on how to administer this yourself.

This weight loss medicine contains the active substance liraglutide. It is similar to a natural occurring hormone (called GLP-1) that is released from the intestine after a meal.

How Saxenda works

The medication works by acting on receptors in the brain that control your appetite, causing you to feel fuller and less hungry. This may help you eat less food and reduce your body weight. It can help you to not only lose weight, but to keep it off as well.

Who can use it?

Saxenda is licensed to treat obesity in people with a BMI of 30kg/m2 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27kg/m2 who have weight-linked health conditions such as:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hyperlipidaemia (high fat or cholesterol levels in the blood)
  • High blood pressure
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

It should not be used by anyone under the age of 18 or by those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Where can you get Saxenda?

Saxenda is not available on the NHS for weight loss; a private prescription is required for the use of this weight loss drug and will be provided to you as part of your weight loss program if appropriate (following an initial consultation).
