PCOS DIET

What You Need to Know

Finding a PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) diet is often a lifeline for women suffering from this condition, which has many symptoms that can affect quality of life (weight gain being just one).

PCOS affects 1 in every 10 women in the UK. More than 50% of these women don’t suffer any symptoms and many may not even know that they have it. But for those who do, it can have a devastating impact on their life and health which goes beyond the physical consequences.

PCOS and weight gain

PCOS makes it more difficult for the body to use the hormone insulin, which normally helps convert sugars and starches from foods into energy. This is known as insulin resistance and can cause insulin and sugar/glucose to build up in the bloodstream.

High insulin levels increase the production of male hormones called androgens, which lead to symptoms such as body hair growth, acne, irregular periods and weight gain.

Weight gain can be damaging to your health and for PCOS sufferers, can also lead to:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnea
  • Infertility
  • Endometrial cancer
  • Many of the above can further lead to heart disease
