About Mysimba

The weight loss medication – Mysimba is a prescription-only weight loss medication which helps to reduce your appetite and reduce your food cravings. It is approved to help you lose weight in conjunction with an active lifestyle and a calorie-controlled balanced diet.

How does it work?

The exact way that Mysimba works is not fully understood, but the two active substances, naltrexone and bupropion, act on the parts of the brain that control food intake and energy balance, as well as reducing the effect of the part of the brain that controls the pleasure associated with eating food.

When given together, their actions reduce appetite and the amount that patients eat, and increase energy expenditure, helping them to stick to a calorie-controlled diet and to reduce their body weight.

How is it taken?

Mysimba is started with a single tablet each morning, with the dose gradually increased over 4 weeks to the recommended dose of two tablets twice a day, preferably taken with food.

Who can use it?

Mysimba is approved for use in patients with an initial body mass index of 30 or greater; it can also be given to those with a body mass index between 27 and 30 if they have additional weight-related conditions such as controlled high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes or high levels of lipid (fat) in the blood. It should not be used by anyone under the age of 18, over the age of 75 or by those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

This weight loss medication is not available on the NHS for weight loss; a private prescription is required for the use of this weight loss drug and will be provided to you are part of our weight loss clinic.
